Are you a B.Tech graduate looking to join the Merchant Navy? You have two primary pathways depending on your engineering specialization: Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) and Electro-Technical Officer (ETO).
Graduate Marine Engineering (GME)
The GME course is a 1-year pre-sea training program designed for Mechanical or Naval Architecture graduates.
Role Onboard: As a Marine Engineer, you will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of all mechanical equipment on the ship, including the main engine, generators, boilers, and pumps.
Career Progression: Junior Engineer ➔ 4th Engineer ➔ 3rd Engineer ➔ 2nd Engineer ➔ Chief Engineer.
Electro-Technical Officer (ETO)
The ETO course is a 4-month pre-sea training program meant for Electrical, Electronics, or Telecommunication graduates.
Role Onboard: Modern ships are highly automated floating cities. As an ETO, you manage all electrical and electronic equipment, including navigation systems, control systems, and communication arrays.
Career Progression: Trainee ETO ➔ Electro-Technical Officer ➔ Senior ETO.
Which Should You Choose?
Your choice is largely dictated by your degree. However, both roles offer excellent salary packages and demand strong technical troubleshooting skills. At Brilliant Brains, our specialized technical coaching helps graduates clear the company entrance tests for both these coveted programs.
